Scientists believe that the toponym "Arizona" is of Native American origin. In the Pima language, it means "the place of a small stream". The Aztec translation of the state's name means "giving birth to silver". The pre-Columbian Hohokam culture existed on the territory of modern Arizona in the 1st - 15th centuries A.D.
